Info for NEW RIDERS

Welcome to Terrigal BMX Club, we are very happy to have you as part of our club.

BMX is one of the fastest growing sports in Australia. It is one of the only sports where total family participation can take place. Riders of all ages ( 2 to 50+) can compete in organised race meetings throughout Australia.

Terrigal BMX club was established in 1982/83 and has approximately 250 members and growing.

Where

Terrigal BMX Club is situated at Duffys Road Terrigal (just past the basketball stadium on the left).

When

Terrigal BMX Club meets and races most Saturday. Racing sign on during non-daylight saving time is 3-3.30pm with racing starting at 4pm. Daylight saving time starts a little earlier with sign 2.30pm  I have attached a copy of our club calendar that shows when we race and also includes races and events that are outside of our club (these are called open events and occur at many different locations around NSW throughout the year). The cost for Saturday racing is $7. We have a sign on desk on race days.

What do I need to start

You do not need an expensive lightweight BMX to start racing, the bike that you ride around the street on is good enough. If they enjoy the sport and want to do it long term then look at purchasing a proper race bike, however they typically start at about $400 for a new bike.

Prior to race day check that the bike is fully functioning and is safe to ride. Typically the front brake on a bike is removed along with any reflectors, baskets or any items that may be sticking out on the bike.

You do not need expensive racing gear either, just wear sensible clothing that covers most of your body is necessary. For example long pants, long sleeve shirt and gloves. A full face helmet is a must and can be purchased from a bike shop. A racing number plate is also required and you can choose a number of your choice between 9 and 999. (Numbers 1-8 are reserved for the top 8 riders in the state, country and world, these can be purchased at the sign on shed on the day of racing.

How old do I need to be

There is no age minimum; typically however children usually start around the age of 4. We do have a mini wheeler class for the younger ones who can’t quite make it around the track on their own yet.

Licenses

To ride (and do training) a valid BMX license is required (to cover insurance costs).

Most riders start off with a 4 month trial license which costs $40.

A full 1 year Open license is $138.40, it allows you to race all over Australia at any club or event

A 1 year club License is $114, this license only allows the rider to compete at their own club.

You will NOT be able to compete at any other club or other clubs opens or events.

Sprocket Rocket license is $132

BMX Mini Wheelers License are $50.00.

Licenses can be purchased online at: http://www.bmxaustralia.com.au/en-us/membership/onlinemembership.aspx

If purchasing online print off a receipt as proof of purchase until you receive your physical license.

After purchasing a license you will need to scan and email your child's birth certificate to membership@bmxaustralia.com.au,  They will not mail you your license until you have done this.

What is the difference between a Clubby and an Open?

Most BMX clubs conduct their own racing at their track weekly or fortnightly. These are called 'clubbies' and normally consist of 5 fun moto races. Most clubs run a points series over the year and award a trophy at the end of the points series.

Every two or three weeks a club in NSW will host an Open. All riders from the state are invited to attend these events and they usually offer small prize money.

See our club calendar for clubby and open race dates.

Most riders start with just riding clubbies. If you are looking for the 'next level' of competition they will then start trying Opens.

What age are Sprockets and Mini Wheelers?

Mini Wheelers is an introductory level where riders develop balance, gross motor skills and independence to begin riding a bike. Riders will be able to develop skills that allow their progression in the sport to become seamless as they progress on to the more traditional BMX bike at around 4 years of age. Mini Wheelers can begin at age of 2

In Australia all riders 7 years or younger are classed as Sprockets and require a 'Sprocket' license.

When they turn 8 they will be upgraded to an Open license.

What age group does a rider ride at Clubbies and Opens?

In BMX we group the riders by the age they turn this year. So at Opens you ride the age you are turning. So if you are turning 10 this year you will ride in 10 years boys/girls.

At clubbies we try to group riders based on ability, we do a time trial at the beginning of each series to ensure the competition is fair for all. The class names are as follows: Sprockets are always sprockets, Tornadoes, stormers, whirlwinds, all stars, cruisers, ladies cruiser and thunders.

Bike sizes

You may hear the terms do you ride a 20" or 24" Bike?

A standard BMX bike has 20" diameter wheels. There is also a separate class called 'Cruisers' which are bikes with 24" diameter wheels.

Kids generally ride a 20" bike, adults generally ride a 24" bike. It is the riders preference and you can ride either or both at clubbies and opens.

What size bike should my Child Have?

This depends on the size of the child but here is a very rough guide to bike sizing. Please get your bike shop to recommend the correct bike size.

Expert - 8-10 year

Number  plates

Sprockets Riders (turning 7 or younger this year) - require an Orange Number Plate with black numbers

How are Terrigal  BMX Club Days run?

We have 3 series that run year round these include; Byron Davies memorial, Presidents Shield and Sean Kerrigan Memorial. Each series has 8 races. To qualify for the series trophy riders must complete 6 or the 8 races in the round. The following explains the usual daily runnings of a clubby:

  1. Working Bee – usually happens during Saturday  1-2 hours before start of sign-on

It includes; sweeping, scraping, watering, rolling, line marking and mowing

Everyone is welcome to help, the more the merrier and the quicker we can get racing.

2.       Setup and Practice

This includes; .Setup commentator's equipment (PA system), canteen setup and start gate setup.

3.        Racing + Sign on- Commences 5pm with sign on 4-4.30pm in daylight savings time and 4pm during non-daylight saving time with sign on 3-3.30pm. Club racing involves 5 motos (races) for each class. If you're running late then call the late sign-on number 0438 893 317.

Bring your license card or proof of license to sign on, confirm rider and class details and pay $7. Then go out and warm up

  • Weekly roster for volunteering
  • Pack-up  - At the conclusion of racing it's time to help the officials put all the equipment away

Weekly results are posted on the Club Web Site together with progressive series scores

If you wish to discuss your rider's grading then come and see Warren at sign on before racing.

Grading is based on ability and is not always an exact science - the overall objective is to keep the riders happy and to challenge them to improve

Who maintains the Terrigal BMX Track?

The track is maintained by the Club which is run by the parents of riders.

The council does not assist us with any maintenance however we do occasionally receive grants and help from the local and state governments which help us maintain improve our facilities.

The club relies on sponsors and race entry money to cover track maintenance costs (soil, machinery)

Before racing we kindly ask parents to arrive early and assist with raking and grooming of the track. We also have working bee’s when racing is not on.

Getting Involved

The sport of BMX depends entirely on volunteers to manage their clubs and to run events.

Volunteers are nearly always parents of children who ride.

Volunteers provide day-to-day assistance with running the club such as canteen, grounds work, club officiating, first aid, etc.

We encourage every parent to become a volunteer - it's easy, FREE, and volunteers are covered by BMXA insurance at the track. We value any level of involvement!! See below on how to become a volunteer:

Getting started is quick and easy - there are just three steps:

1.Become a BMX Volunteer Member (select New Member and then choose Volunteer) – http://www.bmxaustralia.com.au/en-us/membership/onlinemembership.aspx

2.Take the Level 1 Club Official Quiz (easy 10 minute Quiz) - click here

3.Complete the NSW Working With Children Check (online) - click here
