Mum's the Word ...
Banjo (commonly known as Mel Chambers) has been at it again ...
Mum's the Word
At the track yet again
Getting all the gear out
And I still don’t quite get
What all the fuss is about.
Okay boys, off you go now
Yes, of course I’ll watch you.
And yes, I’ll get all the snacks out
What else would I do?
Â
Another weekend at the track
Sitting here reading my book.
And soon we’ll go home
And the dinner, I’ll cook.
Â
What? Me have a turn?
Ha ha, I don’t think so!
What, really, it’s easy?
Okay, I’ll give it a go.
Â
Well, this isn’t so bad
I think I’m going okay
Who would’ve thought
That I would do this today?!
Â
Another lap down
And another drink break.
I wonder how much of this
My body can take…
Â
Okay, let us go home now
That was really quite fun.
And in that little moment
I knew the damage was done.
Â
I need my own bike now
I need one this week
I need to have it in time
For the next club race meet!
Â
Have you found me a bike yet?
No, I don’t care what colour it is.
Just get it right away
Before I lose all my shiz.
Â
My bike it is fab,
And I can’t wait to race.
I’m so damn excited
I can’t get this grin off my face.
Â
My first clubby goes well
I’m a boss on the gate
There’s an open next week
And I can’t bloody wait!
Â
So off to the open we go
Boys you’re on your own now
You just sort yourselves out
You’ll be right, you know how.
Â
Wow my first race is up
I just hope I don’t bomb it…
SELF! Just take it easy
I think I’m going to vomit.
Â
My legs are all jelly
And my nerves they are shot
That race was just awesome
And I don’t even know what place I got!
Â
I can’t ride the next one
I’m feeling quite sick
I think I pushed myself too hard
I went too bloody quick.
Â
Well, my day it is over
After a couple of races
My friends were in stitches
The looks on their faces!
Â
I went out too hard
And put an early end to my day
Doesn’t matter, I loved it
And I went quite good, hey?
Â
Can’t wait till the next one
Can’t wait for more training
What, the practice is cancelled
Oh crap, now it’s raining.
Â
I’m working this out
I’m going better than planned
What? I can’t race the next one?
What do you mean I’m dead-manned?!
Â
What a crap rule,
There’s only three chicks in my class.
And because I am slow
You can just give me the arse?
Â
Well that’s really quite silly,
They’ve got a hide
Kicking me out
When I just want to ride.
Â
Surely there can be exception
When it comes to us mums
Would you rather us sitting
In the crowd on our bums?
Â
And another free lesson
On the pinnacle rule
Yes thanks Neil, I get it
And I still think it’s uncool.
Â
Well, the rules they aren’t changing
Race meets run to the letter.
I only need to beat one
I’ll just have to get better.
Â
Right well I’m getting it sorted
I’m not coming last anymore
Turns out that I have topped
The State Series score.
Â
The boys are laughing at me
And the results on the page.
Well, it’s not my fault
That I’m the only one in my age!
Â
Ouch! A fall in car park
Gees, I am so dumb
I forgot I was clipped in
And now I have a sprained thumb.
Â
These clips are doing my head in
I balance so good in flat shoes
But as soon as I’m clipped in
I’m just waiting to lose.
Â
I love riding my bike
And I love racing too
But it’s all getting so busy
There’s too much to do.
Â
The packing and shopping
The sprints and the training
It’s all getting too much
And my interest is waning.
Â
The boys want me around
To sit between races
And be on the ball
When we visit all of these places.
Â
The road, it is tough
And not every race meet’s the same
I need to be around for the boys
I need to be on my food game.
Â
I loved racing so much
I never thought it would end
But somehow it’s over
So long my dear friend.
Â
It was all so much fun
But not something I mastered
Four years on the bike.
It was great while it lasted.
